Luleå University of Technology is the leading European university in mining and metallurgy. The Department of Civil, Environmental and Natural Resources Engineering (CENE) offers unique, collective research expertise across the entire mining and minerals chain. The research subject Mining and Rock Engineering belongs to the department of CENE, and is now seeking a highly motivated PhD student contributing towards science and technology in managing deep-mining related rock mechanics problems. In our postgraduate education. we strive for the doctoral student to develop into an expert on the subject but also develop as a person.

SUBJECT DESCRIPTION
The research subject Mining and Rock Engineering comprises mining technology, rock engineering and rock mechanics, including rock mass properties, design of rock excavations and tunneling as well as planning- and production processes related to both mining and civil engineering.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The PhD project DESTRESSING (Destressing strategies for mining under highly stressed conditions in the deep mines of Sweden) is funded by the Swedish Governmental Agency for Innovation Systems (Vinnova) and three Swedish mining companies in 2021-2024. In this project, we intend to develop destressing strategies to mitigate rockburst risk and deformation potential under highly stressed conditions in the deep mines of Sweden. To achieve this goal, we will first develop a methodology for assessing burst-proneness and deformation potential of excavations. After the methodology is developed, it will be used to evaluate the effectiveness of destress blasting technique through numerical modelling by using LS-DYNA and 3DEC. Based on numerical simulation, a blasting design will be suggested for a field destressing test. The effectiveness of destress blasting will then be compared with conventional blasting on site.

Three senior researchers who have expertise in rock mechanics, blasting and seismicity will work in the project as well. We expect a close cooperation between the senior researchers and the PhD student as well as collaboration between universities and mining industry.

DUTIES
As a PhD student, you are expected to perform both theoretical and field work within your research studies as well as communicate your results at national and international conferences and in scientific journals. You shall read compulsory doctoral courses too. The majority of your working time will be devoted to your own research studies. In addition, you may have the opportunity to try out the teaching role.

QUALIFICATIONS
In order to be eligible for employment you must have a MSc in Mining Engineering, Civil Engineering, Solid Mechanics or equivalent educational background in relevant subjects.

Knowledge of numerical modelling, blasting and seismicity as well as experience of field monitoring is desirable. Since much of the work will be conducted on site and in close collaboration with other researchers and industry partners, the ability to work collaboratively in larger groups is an important asset. Applicants must have good skills in both written and spoken English.

Fulltime fixed-term employment for 4 years (up to maximum five years). Departmental duties such as administration and/or teaching up to maximum 20 % of fulltime may be added.
