Creaternity is an interdisciplinary research initiative to achieve the transition to a sustainable society. Creaternity Graduate School spans over many research subjects at Luleå University of Technology to create a holistic view in order to tackle the sustainability challenges. The Graduate School includes courses and other activities that will provide doctoral students with knowledge and tools to determine how the earth’s resources could be used and reused in the best way.

The research subject Urban Water Engineering at the Department of Civil, Environmental and Natural Resources Engineering, is looking for an engaged PhD student that would like to study circular nutrient flows from wastewater to food production and connect waste energy flows in an industrial and urban resource efficient symbiosis.

The Urban Water Research Group has a strong position in research and education within the area of urban water systems mainly regarding stormwater, wastewater treatment and sewer systems. The overall aim of the group is to contribute to the development of sustainable urban water systems.  Being a part of the Urban Water Research Group implies working in an international and creative environment. The group consists of a number of senior researchers, Swedish and international adjunct professors and about 20 doctoral candidates. The group has an extensive national and international collaboration network. The research education is well organized and for all PhD students a mixture of research methodologies is encouraged to be included in the PhD studies, such as experimental, field and modeling studies, which is a clear competitive edge of the Urban Water Research Group.

Project description
The research project you will work in aims at creating an innovative symbiosis between industry and urban built environments and ultimately connect energy and nutrient flows for local food production. The project is in line with the EU action plan for circular economy that aims to achieve the changes needed for a sustainable future. You will work interdisciplinary with innovative sustainability in the field were urban water systems meets energy and control engineering. Treatment of black water with respect to micro-pollutants and how the sludge could be dried with excess heat from data centers is in focus. The work will include modeling, simulation and optimization as well as laboratory studies.

Duties
You will work independently and plan and carry out studies, write scientific papers and your thesis. In between the research task you are studying courses and take part at national and international conferences and seminars. The research work is interdisciplinary and you will have three supervisors from the research subjects Urban Water Engineering and Control Engineering that will support you. As a PhD student within Creaternity, you will belong to the Creaternity Graduate School at Luleå University of Technology. The graduate school gathers many PhD students that work with research questions related to digitalization to reach a circular use of material to reach a resource effective and carbon dioxide neutral society.

Qualifications
In order to be eligible for employment you must have a master within Environmental Engineering, Natural Resource Engineering, Civil Engineering, or other comparable Master. Knowledge about wastewater treatment and nutrient resource recovery is a prerequisite. An interest in heat transfer, control engineering, modelling, optimization and laboratory work is a merit.

Good knowledge in English is a prerequisite since the research results are presented at international conferences and in international journals. Furthermore, it is important to be able to work independently, be able to lead your project forward and have the capability to penetrate new areas and questions. We expect you to have a driving license or take a driving license as soon as possible. If asked, you should be able to give contact details to two reference persons.
