The European Spallation Source is one of the largest science and technology infrastructure projects being built today. The project includes the most powerful linear proton accelerator ever built, a five-tonne, helium-cooled tungsten target wheel, 15 state-of-the-art neutron instruments, a suite of laboratories, and a supercomputing data management and software development centre. In the context of its history and future as a scientific organisation, however, it is more than the sum of its parts. It is a brand-new Big Science organisation and we are building it from the ground up.

Come and build the future of Science with us!

About the role:

Are you ready to lead the charge in shaping the future of accelerator science at the European Spallation Source? As the Head of the Accelerator Division, you'll step into a senior leadership role where your expertise and vision will drive innovation and excellence in accelerator technology and operations.

The Accelerator Division is comprised of 6 groups; Beam Physics and Diagnostics, Linac, Electrical Power Systems, Radio Frequency Systems, Cryogenics and Vacuum. As Head of Division, you will report to the ESS Technical Director and you'll take responsibility for managing and directing the division staff as well as planning, managing and executing the Accelerator Sub-Project plan in collaboration with our in-kind partners.

Leading the Accelerator Division means being at the helm of technical management, coordinating divisional efforts, and providing line management oversight for the division management team. You'll be instrumental in managing the technical contributions of the Accelerator Sub-Project to ensure that project milestones are met on schedule and within budget. You'll also develop and implement a vision for sustainable high-reliability operation and future accelerator innovation, advocating for cost-effective design and construction of maintenance and test facilities.

As the Head of Division you will also work to sustain collaborative relationships with in-kind partners, foster knowledge transfer to ESS staff, and ensure effective integration across organisational boundaries. You'll work closely with other technical sub-projects within the Technical and Science Directorates, to align commissioning and operations activities with the scientific programme's needs.

As a leader, you'll inspire division staff to deliver high-quality work, fostering a culture of excellence and continuous improvement. You'll also prioritise the professional development of division staff, ensuring they have the skills and capabilities needed to excel in their roles. In addition to your divisional responsibilities, you'll serve as a key member of the ESS Technical Board (ETB) and other boards and committees, both internal and external, contributing your expertise to strategic decision-making.

This is a permanent, full-time position based at the ESS Campus in Lund, Sweden - so if you're a seasoned leader with a passion for accelerator science and operations - and a track record of driving results - then we want to hear from you.

About you:

This is a senior management level position which comes with significant opportunities - but also no shortage of challenges. As such, we are seeking someone who is highly motivated by not just leadership and people management, but who also thrives in an environment where there can be multiple, competing problems to solve simultaneously.

As this role is highly specialised and technical in nature, your educational background should include a Master’s or higher degree in Physics, Engineering, or a closely related discipline. As a leader, your style is characterised by your capacity to inspire, motivate, and empower others by creating a positive and compelling vision for the future organisation.

Our ideal candidate has the gravitas needed to understand the complexities of this role - as well as the proven ability to lead large, diverse teams covering all facets of accelerator design, delivery, operations and maintenance. You must be an experienced manager who has held similar leadership positions within a big science or similar complex engineering facility. Your track record includes driving high performance teams in complex environments where you have had to manage significant deliverables and budgets. A demonstrated proficiency in leading the performance and development process for direct reports, as well as creating a supportive culture where talented staff can develop and thrive, is essential for this role.

We are building ESS from scratch, so we need a visionary leader who is comfortable not only following procedures, but also creating and improving them. We attach great importance to personality and attitude, so we're looking for a collaborative and decisive individual: Someone who has a broad, comprehensive approach to various issues, events and developments and who can comprehend their long-term significance; who can make prompt, clear, evidence-based decisions by identifying the resources needed to accomplish tasks; and who has the proven ability to use political processes to influence and persuade others.

The working language of ESS is English but the ability to speak Swedish would be an advantage.
