The European Spallation Source is one of the largest science and technology infrastructure projects being built today. The project includes the most powerful linear proton accelerator ever built, a five-tonne, helium-cooled tungsten target wheel, 15 state-of-the-art neutron instruments, a suite of laboratories, and a supercomputing data management and software development centre. In the context of its history and future as a scientific organisation, however, it is more than the sum of its parts. It is a brand-new Big Science organisation and we are building it from the ground up.

Come and build the future of Science with us!

About the role:

At ESS, we have set ourselves very high goals for sustainability. For the process cooling system, this means we are committed to recovering waste heat and returning it as district heating to the city of Lund. To achieve this, there is a central cooling system that supplies the entire ESS campus. It is roughly divided into three parts; the accelerator, the target station and instrument stations. Parts of the accelerator have been commissioned and commissioning of the target station's cooling system will soon begin. As more parts of ESS are completed, operation and maintenance also need to grow. In the Infrastructure Operations & Maintenance group, we oversee the operation and maintenance of the Electricity, HVAC, Sprinkler and Cooling services to the site.

As our next process technician, you are expected to be involved in the development of the cooling systems. Over time, you will learn the entire ESS cooling system, but you will have extra focus on the target station when it is put into operation. You will participate in the cooling systems handover process, take ownership of the operation and maintenance aspects and participate in testing/commissioning programs for individual item testing as well as integrated system testing. During this period, you are expected to acquire knowledge about the various parts of the systems, based on experience from actual operation and maintenance of the equipment, as well as learn about the behaviour of the individual systems with regard to the different operating modes and the transitions between them.

This is a full-time, permanent position based at the ESS Campus in Lund, Sweden. As ESS operates 24 hours a day 7 days a week, shift work and on-call duties are required for this role.

About you:

To thrive with us in the Infrastructure Operations & Maintenance group, you need to be driven, responsive and good at spotting both problems and opportunities. You need to be a highly motivated person who isn’t afraid to get your hands dirty! We are looking for a new colleague who enjoys working in a group, has excellent communication skills, who likes to collaborate with different people and who can communicate in both English and Swedish at a high level.

First and foremost, we need someone who is suitably qualified and experienced. This means that you must have a relevant technical education (at least at upper secondary school level) - preferably with some form of extension in process, energy operation and maintenance or plumbing. Experience of having worked with control systems or a technical background in automation is advantageous. The most important thing is that you have a technical interest and are curious and persistent in learning new things.

You are expected to be self-motivated, organized and able to work independently as well as in a group. This position requires a hands-on approach, a willingness to learn new techniques across a variety of projects, and to become part of a team with diverse backgrounds and skills. You must have good communication skills, be meticulous and maintain a high quality in your work, and be prepared to responsibly take on tasks with great variety. ESS is currently a construction project, but will become a facility for our users, external international researchers, and therefore commitment, good service and understanding of the needs of others is important.

We are building ESS from the ground up, so we need someone who is comfortable not only following procedures, but also creating them. We attach great importance to personality and attitude, so we're looking for a real team player: Someone who is sociable, has excellent communication skills, who likes to collaborate with different people and who is committed to helping this amazing project to realise its full potential. We need a hands-on self-starter who is able to work in a structured, orderly, responsible and – most importantly – safe way.

What can we offer?

Aside from the chance to work at truly unique big science project, you can also expect:

  • An opportunity to contribute to the future discoveries within neutron science.
  • A stunning, brand new workplace filled with innovative minds and brilliant people from across the globe.
  • A challenging, innovative and stimulating work environment.
  • Market competitive compensation that is individual and differentiated according to role, responsibilities, individual skills, abilities and achievements.
  • 25 days of annual leave, as well as more than 10 days of public holiday and company days off or days with limited working hours.
  • Monthly pension contributions on top of your salary.
