The European Spallation Source is one of the largest science and technology infrastructure projects being built today. The project includes the most powerful linear proton accelerator ever built, a five-tonne, helium-cooled tungsten target wheel, 15 state-of-the-art neutron instruments, a suite of laboratories, and a supercomputing data management and software development centre. In the context of its history and future as a scientific organisation, however, it is more than the sum of its parts. It is a brand-new Big Science organisation and we are building it from the ground up.

Come and build the future of Science with us!

About the role:

ESS is at an exciting turning point. It is in transition from being a construction site, to being an operating facility. To help us realise our goal of being the most powerful neutron source in the world, we are looking for a Welder Technician to join our Manufacturing Team. The manufacturing team has five employees and acts as a central service organisation, supplying the whole facility with manufacturing related tasks. This includes machining of components, manufacturing related technical support as well as outsourcing of components not suitable for in-house production. A welding coordination is already established and certified for ISO 3834-2 and EN 1090-1.

Being a small team working in a changing environment requires a flexible approach and a proactive, motivated mindset so that we can work together to solve problems with short notice. The work is short series production runs (often only one to five details of each part) in a wide variety of materials. We use state of the art machines and tools to deliver a high quality finished product to all parts of the ESS Organisation.

Job description:

As our next welder technician your responsibilities will include the following:

  1. Hold personal welding certificates as instructed by ESS Manufacturing Welding Coordinator.
  2. Execute welding activities under existing ISO certification.
  3. Develop competences within general metal fabrication methods, surface treatments, and general quality control.
  4. Contribute to general technical activities within the mechanical workshop as demanded by Manufacturing Functional Leader.

This is a full-time, permanent position based at the ESS Campus in Lund, Sweden.

About you:

To thrive with us in the Manufacturing Team, you need to be driven, responsive and good at spotting both problems and opportunities. You need to be a highly motivated person who isn’t afraid to get your hands dirty!

For this role, it is essential that you hold an International Welding diploma or an equivalent qualification. We welcome applications from both newly graduated welders to more experienced welders with several years of prior work experience.

For this role, it would be an advantage if you have

  • Prior experience with material group 1, 2, 3, 8, 10, 22, 23, 3x.
  • The ability to decode both 2D and 3D drawings with ISO GPS.
  • Prior experience of working with sheet metal.
  • A hot work permit.
  • A forklift license.
  • An overhead crane certificate.

We are building ESS from the ground up, so we need someone who is comfortable not only following procedures, but also creating them. We attach great importance to personality and attitude, so we're looking for a real team player: Someone who is sociable, has excellent communication skills, who likes to collaborate with different people and who is committed to helping this amazing project to realise its full potential. We need a hands-on self-starter who is able to work in a structured, orderly, responsible and – most importantly – safe way.

The working language of ESS is English but it would be great if you could also work in Swedish as well.

What can we offer?

Aside from the chance to work at truly unique big science project, you can also expect:

  • An opportunity to contribute to the future discoveries within neutron science.
  • A stunning, brand new workplace filled with innovative minds and brilliant people from across the globe.
  • A challenging, innovative and stimulating work environment.
  • Market competitive compensation that is individual and differentiated according to role, responsibilities, individual skills, abilities and achievements.

  • Monthly pension contributions on top of your salary.
  • Flexible working arrangements and a real work-life balance.
  • Preventative healthcare benefits.
