Information about the research
In this project, an analytical framework (data, methods, impact indicators) will be developed for assessment of a broad range of environmental impacts. The framework will be applied in holistic environmental evaluations of innovative land use and grass-based biorefining to produce high-quality protein feed, biogas feedstocks and fibers with potential for further refining into different biobased products. The framework development will include adaptation of existing environmental sustainability evaluation frameworks, complemented with collection and processing of data generated in association with a grass-based biorefinery pilot plant. Together with stakeholders and Swedish and Danish researchers, the post doc will support decision-making concerning the development of novel land use and biorefinery solutions as well as making recommendations on further development needs concerning the analytical framework.
The research work is carried out within an Interreg-project on sustainable land use and grass-based biorefineries - GreenValleys - involving researchers at Chalmers, the Swedish Agricultural University in Skara, and Aarhus University in Denmark. The post doc will be employed at the Division of Physical Resource Theory, Department of Space, Earth and Environment, Chalmers. The Division of Physical Resource Theory carries out research and education on potential solutions to major sustainability challenges, e.g., climate change, energy systems transitions, and the sustainable use of land and other resources. We commonly work in multi-discplinary teams employing different quantitative and qualitative methods with the ambition to build challenge-driven scientific excellence by crossing traditional disciplinary boundaries. The division has about 50 staff members, faculty and PhD-students with diverse expertise, including engineers, natural and social scientists. We also offer courses in areas related to our research.
As a postdoc your main responsibility is to pursue own research. You are expected to have the ability to plan and organize your work, and to work independently as well as in close collaboration with other researchers involved in the GreenValleys project. You will also be involved in the dissemination of project results, so you should be comfortable communicating scientific results, both orally and in written form, in English. Given that the project involves significant interaction with stakeholders in Sweden and Denmark, an ability to communicate in Swedish and/or other Nordic languages is considered a merit. However, it is not a strict requirement.
The position also includes teaching on undergraduate and master's levels as well as supervising master's and/or PhD students to a certain extent. Another important aspect involves collaboration within academia and with society at large. The position is meritorious for future research duties within academia as well as industry/the public sector.
Full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to a maximum of two years (1+1).
To qualify for the position of postdoc you must have a doctoral degree, preferably in (but not limited to) environmental/agricultural/engineering sciences. A PhD in a research field closely related to the project description is highly meritorious. Documented scientific skills, including demonstrated ability in independent research, publishing in top journals and presenting in international conferences are required.
We expect the applicant to have the ambition and ability to take on own responsibility and to work independently towards set goals. The applicant should be comfortable in communicating and collaborating with people in different functions in society and must be willing to work with stakeholder, e.g., making study visists to collect data, presenting results and discussing future analyses at stakeholder meetings. As the project includes interaction with Scandinavian researchers and stakeholders, good knowledge in Swedish and/or other Nordic languages is a merit. The research work may involve travels in rural areas for consultation and data collection and it is therefore beneficial if the applicant has a driver's licence.
