The Department of Computer Science and Engineering is a joint department at Chalmers University of Technology and the University of Gothenburg, with activities on two campuses in the city of Gothenburg. The department has around 240 employees from over 30 countries. Our research has a wide span, from theoretical foundations to applied systems development. Information about the research
Computing technology is at a challenging inflection point where transistor scaling is tapering off and where increased performance must come from novel use of hardware resources as accelerators. At the same time, data-centric applications are driving the computing scene with AI being an important application driver. A new project focusing on Processing in Memory (PIM)  is being launched where the goal is to investigate principles for co-designing Machine Learning algorithms with a scalable architecture built from PIM devices. The vision is that by moving computation close to the memory, it will be possible to substantially increase performance as expensive data transfers can be avoided. The challenge, however, is in understanding the principles for how to map Machine Learning applications onto a parallel tiled PIM architecture to maximize performance. The project focuses on this challenge. One of the goals is to implement the developed ideas into a FPGA proof-of-concept prototype.

The project will be run in the Division of Computer Engineering within the Department of Computer Science and Engineering. The High-Performance Computer Architecture Group, within the Division of Computer Engineer, under the leadership of Professor Per Stenstrom, is conducting frontiere research on design principles for the next generation computer systems. To ease the programming task and yet achieve high and predictable computational performance at as high an energy efficiency as possible is an important objective in the knowledge generation process that the group contributes with. To this end, the group has a solid track record and a long-term focus on contributing to design principles of parallel computers. Four faculty members, two postdocs and thirteen Ph.D students are engaged in research in computer architecture.

International students rate the Chalmers educational experience as the best in Europe, according to results from the International Student Barometer. The quality of teaching and assessment receives particular praise. Additionally, when asked if the University was overall ‘a good place to be’, students’ responses put Chalmers at number one in the world. Chalmers is launching a MSc program in High-Performance Computer Systems and in Data Science, putting the topic of this PhD project in the centre of gravity of educational efforts.

Major responsibilities
As a PhD student at Chalmers, you have a five-year employment to carry out the research and course work needed to obtain a PhD degree. In addition, you will be helping out with teaching task to an amount of 20% of your time typically as a teaching assistant. 

Position summary
Full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to a maximum of five years.

Qualifications
You have a MSc degree corresponding to at least 240 higher education credits in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or Electrical Engineering or equivalent and with high grades in relevant courses and especially Computer Architecture.
