Postdoc position in yeast metabolic engineering

Reference number REF 2024-0236

We are seeking to employ a postdoctoral researcher to work in the research group of Dr Eduard Kerkhoven, as part of the Division of Systems and Synthetic Biology: one of the world leading research environments in metabolic engineering of yeast. The selected researcher will join an internationally-regarded, collaborative, friendly, diverse and inclusive team working on the application of cutting-edge metabolic engineering tools to address current biotechnological challenges.

Project description
Biorefineries, where renewable feedstocks are converted by microbial biocatalysts to bio-based chemicals, are instrumental to transition away from fossil-resource dependent processes. In our research group, we use state-of-the-art technologies such as CRISPR, adaptive laboratory evolution, integrative omics data analysis and computational models of metabolism to engineer yeast as microbial biocatalyst. Beyond the proof-of-concept stage, we now look to make the process industrially relevant, by addressing aspects such as optimizing TRY, optimal feedstock usage and fermentation scale-up. This project is part of a larger collaborative consortium between several European academic institutions and companies.

Major responsibilities
As a postdoctoral researcher, your major responsibility is to move the research project forwards, in collaboration with other project partners. You will be responsible for planning, running experiments, evaluation of the scientific outcome, and helping to provide future directions. In addition to the conceived project, there will be some room to further explore your own ideas, experience and research interests. You are expected to communicate your results through presentations at Chalmers, conferences and consortium meetings, in addition to writing articles for academic journals. The position will include the co-supervision of master's and PhD students, together with potential involvement in teaching if desired.

Qualifications
The successful candidate must have a PhD degree in Biotechnology, Microbiology, Genetics, or similar. Meritorious are experience in working with yeast; bioreactor cultivations; and metabolic engineering.

To qualify for the position of postdoc, you must hold a doctoral degree awarded no more than three years prior to the application deadline (according to the current agreement with the Swedish Agency for Government Employers). Exceptions from the 3-year limit can be made for longer periods resulting from parental leave, sick leave or military service*.

The position requires sound verbal and written communication skills in English. Swedish is not a requirement but Chalmers offers Swedish courses.

You are expected to be somewhat accustomed to teaching, and to demonstrate good potential within research and education.

* The date shown in your doctoral degree certificate is the date we use, as this is the date you have met all requirements for the doctoral degree.

Contract terms
This postdoc position is a full-time temporary employment for two years.
