The Department of Microtechnology and Nanoscience focuses on research, innovation and education within the fields of future electronics, photonics, bio- and nanosystems. Information about the research

The use of digital data is increasing faster than our ability to uncover new bandwidth. Space division multiplexing (SDM) is the next frontier in fiber-optic communications. SDM utilizes the space dimension in specialty fibers to substantially increase the capacity of lightwave communication systems. The outstanding challenge towards deployment is finding truly scalable solutions that avoid a linear increase of cost and power consumption with capacity.

The general aim of this project is to investigate the use of microresonator frequency combs for space division multiplexing. Microresonator combs provide an unprecedented opportunity to enhance the operability of SDM systems thanks to their compatibility with photonic integration, high performance and broad bandwidth. We have obtained funding from the European Research Council through a Consolidator grant to explore this emerging line of research. We are seeking postdoctoral fellows with expertise in numerical modeling of nonlinear optics, ultrafast photonics and/or fiber-optic communication systems.

The Photonics laboratory at the Microtechnology and Nanoscience Department (MC2) is a dynamic and creative group with about 30 members working in an international and collaborative atmosphere. We perform both curiosity-driven and applied-research in the areas of optoelectronics, nanophotonics, and fiber optic systems. We enjoy a state-of-the-art laboratory for fiber-optic communications and have access to in-house cleanroom facilities to manufacture photonic devices.

Major responsibilities
As postdoctoral fellow, your main responsibilities are to lead and conduct research, and guide junior PhD students. You will have the freedom to contribute with your ideas, and the support from an outstanding team of more senior researchers. You will have the opportunity to collaborate and perform short research stays with our colleagues from the US, Denmark, UK, Japan and Spain. The position is meritorious for future research duties within academia as well as industry/the public sector.

Position summary
The postdoctoral position is a full-time employment position limited to 2 years. We offer a competitive salary, excellent working conditions and access to world-class facilities and infrastructure. Starting date is negotiable.

You should have a PhD degree (or equivalent) in Applied Physics, Engineering Physics, Electrical Engineering or similar. The topic of your PhD must be directly related to at least one of the following areas:

• Metrology with laser frequency combs (microresonator frequency combs, modelocked fiber lasers…)
• Fiber-optic coherent communication systems (SDM transmission experiments, DSP…)
• Numerical modeling of nonlinear complex phenomena (supercontinuum, nonlinear waveguides…)
