The department of Mechanics and Maritime Sciences (M2) conducts fundamental and applied research in all modes of transport to achieve sustainable technological solutions. M2 holds one of Sweden’s most extensive simulator centre for navigation and propulsion of ships, as well as world class laboratories within combustion engineering and wind tunnels. We are offering a position as a Postdoctoral Researcher in the subject of Dynamics and Control of Electric Vehicles

The position is intended for 2 years PostDoc within a EU funded project about vehicle dynamics and regenerative braking control of passenger electric vehicles. The main research in vehicle dynamics control will be related to modelling, simulation and control system development of the regenerative braking with the electric powertrain. Specific requirements for the vehicle dynamics and regenerative braking control project are foreseen to be: 1) Maximize the energy recuperation using brake blending (electric and friction braking) and 2) Maintain vehicle driveability and stability and 3) Consider constraints and restrictions from the electric powertrain (battery, motor). Efficient and safe brake blending control with an integrated high speed drive module for real-life driving cycles is especially a novel research area, since conventional (electric) vehicles are not developed for such requirements. The high speed drive module poses several control challenges because of fast dynamics and large effective rotational inertia. The control algorithms will be integrated in a prototype electric powertrain and demonstration vehicle. Within the project there will be availability of test vehicles.

As PostDoc you will have your project as your main responsibility, but you will also take part in teaching to approximately 10%. It includes formulating and supervising MSc theses mainly connected to the research project. The intention is that you also publish papers and other merits towards the academic degree Docent.

The Vehicle Dynamics group is within the VEAS division and the group is active within an area which can be spanned in these dimensions:

• From heavy vehicles to passenger cars (smaller vehicles is a possible future extension)
• Both within longitudinal and lateral dynamics, in both cases including actuator dynamics (propulsion, brake, steering)
• Both events-like manoeuvres (typically 5-10 s) and longer vehicle operations (typically 10 min to several hours). The first often addresses safety, the latter addresses transport efficiency and both address user experience.

The division VEAS focuses on engineering of systems in the application of vehicles and robots. Our strengths are the knowledge of finding solutions to authentic problems. Our aim is to provide innovative solutions to problems of industrial relevance, by means of theory, modelling, simulations, and experimental work. The division has 5 faculty members, about 20 PhD students, and a number of post-docs and researchers. The main research areas are on energy efficient, safe and adaptive vehicles, and autonomous systems operating in unstructured environments.

Major responsibilities
Your major responsibility will be to pursue the research and development within the project. You are expected to develop your own scientific ideas and concepts, and to communicate the results of your research verbally and in writing. You will be guided by senior researchers at the involved department and companies. Your major responsibility as postdoc is to perform your own research in the research group. The position also includes teaching on undergraduate and master's levels as well as supervising master's and/or PhD students to a certain extent. The position is meritorious for future research duties within academia as well as industry/the public sector.

Position summary
The position is a full-time temporary employment with a competitive salary and with social benefits. The position is limited to a maximum of two years (1+1).

Qualifications
Mandatory educational qualifications:
• PhD in Automotive, Mechanical, Mechatronics/Control, or Physics engineering

Meritorious educational qualifications:
• Driver licence

Mandatory experience and skills:
• Modelling and simulation of Mechanical and Mechatronic dynamic systems.
• Good knowledge of the English language (both oral and written), writing of scientific papers
• Leadership skills will be valuable in teaching, including supervision of MSc theses

Meritorious experience and skills:
• Matlab/Simulink

You need to be motivated, self-propelled, cooperative, strategic and analytically problem-solving. It will be important to understand and be interested in the whole scope; From the design and development of the integrated modular high speed electric drive module to regenerative and motion control of the electric vehicle.

The position requires sound verbal and written communication skills in English, as well as an ability to plan and organize the work involved.
