The Department of Computer Science and Engineering is a joint department at Chalmers University of Technology and the University of Gothenburg, with activities on two campuses in the city of Gothenburg. The department has around 240 employees from over 30 countries. Our research has a wide span, from theoretical foundations to applied systems development. We provide high quality education at Bachelor's, Master's and graduate levels, offering over 120 courses each year. We also have extensive national and international collaborations with academia, industry and society.


Information about the project

The European Marie-Sklodowska-Curie Innovative Training Network TOMOCON joins 12 international academic institutions and 15 industry partners. In this network, we address the emerging field of industrial process control using smart tomographic sensors. The network will lay the scientific and technological foundation of integrating imaging sensors into industrial processes and will demonstrate its functional feasibility on lab and pilot-scale applications. Our doctoral researchers will be trained and work in the fields of process tomography hardware, software, and algorithms, control systems theory and design, industrial process design, multi-physics modelling and simulation, human-computer interaction (HCI), and massive parallel data processing. Within TOMOCON we seek excellent open-minded and team-spirited PhD candidates who will get unique international, interdisciplinary and inter-sectoral training in scientific and transferable skills by distinguished leaders from academia and industry. Within the TOMOCON network we offer the following PhD position at the Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE), Chalmers University of Technology. The research group will be the t2i lab at Chalmers, http://t2i.se.

Major responsibilities
Industrial tomography provides rich data but new control methodologies are needed if these data are to be used for real-time control. Human-computer interaction (HCI), visual analytics and machine learning are all disciplines needed to tackle such challenges. The PhD candidate will develop a novel methodology based on image data reduction and visualisation to present process information to operators. This will include selecting and evaluating suitable tools, formats, and architectures. The candidate will also develop concepts for multi-parametric and multimodal visualisation of different tomographic modalities. Finally, the PhD candidate will demonstrate the efficiency of this approach within TOMOCON for microwave drying processes. The PhD candidate will spend secondments of about eight months in total for technical and scientific training on: microwave technology at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), Germany, thermal processing in industrial production at Pinta Elements GmbH, Germany, industrial control and X-ray techniques at Siemens AG, Germany, and on system integration and demonstration of controlled microwave drying in the HEPHAISTOS lab at KIT. The PhD degree will be awarded by Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden.

You are expected to develop your own scientific concepts and communicate the results of your research verbally and in writing, both in Swedish and in English. High-level venues for publication will typically be ACM CHI https://chi2018.acm.org; ACM UIST https://uist.acm.org/uist2017/; and IEEE VIS http://ieeevis.org. The position generally also includes teaching on Chalmers' undergraduate level or performing other duties corresponding to up to 20 per cent of working hours.

Position summary
Full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to a maximum of five years.

Qualifications
• Distinct university graduation in computer science; focus on Human-Computer Interaction, Interactive Computer Graphics, or Information Visualization
• Profound knowledge of human-computer interaction and/or image data processing
• Sound expertise in mathematical optimization and mathematical modelling
• Advanced programming skills
• Strong interest in user interface design and user interface evaluation
• Good proficiency in English language

Eligibility criteria
The candidate recruited in the TOMOCON project must be Early-Stage Researcher (ESR) and undertake transnational mobility (secondments, trainings, conferences). The candidate must be in the first four years from the date when the researcher obtained the degree entitling him or her to embark on a doctorate (e.g. master degree). It will be counted backward from the date of recruitment (e.g. 01.03.2018). No doctoral degree has been awarded during these four years. The candidate can be of any nationality. The candidate must not have resided or carried out her/his main activity (work, studies, etc.) in Sweden for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately before the recruitment date. Compulsory national service, short stays such as holidays, and time spent as part of a procedure for obtaining refugee status under the Geneva Convention are not taken into account.
