Chalmers University of Technology has an open position as senior lecturer/associate professor in engineering education research. The position is a full-time tenure appointment. The position will be placed at the Division of Engineering Education Research, EER, at the Department of Communication and Learning in Science, CLS.

Information about the department and the division
The department has a strong focus on education and teaching at different levels. At the same time CLS is in the process of building and developing a solid research environment. The department's main research areas include engineering education research, academic development, authentic learning environments, learning for sustainability, technology-enhanced learning, language and communication for specific purposes including English as a medium of instruction (EMI), information literacy for research and learning, and bibliometrics.

Engineering education research is an area that is under strong development at Chalmers. EER develops and provides courses and support in the area of teaching and learning in higher education. The courses have been developed into a structured program designed to meet the recommendations of the Association of Swedish Higher Education (SUHF) and the division also contributes to Chalmers secondary school STEM teacher education. STEM stands for science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

A strong guiding principle for activities at the division, and the department, is the contribution to and support for an infrastructure for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning, SoTL, at Chalmers. The division has developed to be a strong research environment, in particular in action-based research in cooperation with academic staff at Chalmers and other universities. Furthermore, the department has a graduate school within engineering education research.

We now seek candidates with a strong interest and documented background in engineering education research and development who can contribute to the division’s teaching activities and the research environment at EER and CLS with a focus on enhanced student learning in higher education and the required faculty development.

Major responsibilities
The division has a large educational assignment in providing courses, training and supervision within teaching and learning in higher education in order to support academic staff development [course website], as well as acting as a part of the pedagogical hub at Chalmers. Therefore, the successful candidate is expected to contribute to the division’s teaching assignments this area.

In addition to teaching, the successful candidate is expected to participate in building the research environment at the department by conducting research in engineering education and contributing to PhD student supervision and applications for external funding.

Full-time permanent employment.

The qualification required for the position is one of the following:
A PhD in educational science with a focus on one of the STEM areas and higher education.
A PhD in one of the STEM areas together with a documented academic track record in engineering education research and development.

In addition, the candidates must have completed courses or training in teaching and learning in higher education corresponding to a total of at least ten weeks’ full-time studies. For the position associate professor there is an additional requirement of having completed a course or training in supervision of doctoral students. A successful external candidate, who does not fully meet these requirements, will be expected to complete this competence development within the first two years of employment.

The candidates have teaching experience at university level, preferably in engineering education. Experience of giving academic staff development courses in pedagogy is meritorious.

Regardless of the level, the position requires sound verbal and written communication skills in Swedish and English. If Swedish is not your native language, you must be able to teach in Swedish on undergraduate level after two years. Chalmers offers Swedish courses.

The position's level will be determined on the basis of your scientific qualifications. The position of Associate Professor requires scientific expertise that is considerably higher than that required for a doctoral degree (corresponding to admission as “oavlönad docent”).
