PhD student position in Energy Systems Analysis

Reference number REF 2024-0466

The PhD position on offer at the division of Energy Technology, Chalmers will join a team of senior researchers, postdocs and PhD students dedicated to research with the aim to identify and evaluate different pathways toward sustainable energy and transport systems.

The overall goal of the project is to create an understanding of how city energy systems - with the city of Gothenburg as a project partner and case - can become more resilient by developing and applying energy systems modeling, combined with analysis of the conditions for implementing the different modeled scenarios at different organizational and administrative levels within the city.

Project description
The PhD-position at Chalmers will develop and apply energy systems modeling on a city level with the aim to understand the opportunities and challenges to transform the city to be more resilient, while complying with climate targets. The PhD candidate will develop and execute analyses to test scenarios developed in cooperation with the two other partner universities, applying an iterative and integrated approach to support the project’s transdisciplinary research design. The development and application of the energy systems modelling will take a departure in a previously developed city energy systems model. The PhD project will further develop the modeling with focus on division into sub-areas within the city and implementation of distributed generation, mainly from solar and wind power as well as demand and flexibility representation within each sub-area and with trade between the sub areas as well as import/export of energycarriers from the surrounding energy system.

The doctoral position is one of three doctoral positions in the project “STORE - The city as a resilient energy system”, which is carried out in close cooperation between Linköping, Lund and Chalmers Universities and the City of Gothenburg in the form of three PhD projects, within the framework of a Research school in energy systems funded by the Swedish Energy Agency.

Major responsibilities
Your major responsibilities as PhD student is to pursue your own doctoral studies. You are expected to develop your own scientific concepts and communicate the results of your research verbally and in writing, both in Swedish and in English.
