Information about the research
We’re currently looking for post-doctoral research fellows to join our team to develop a next generation drug discovery platform. The innovative project is embedded in an interdisciplinary collaboration between Chalmers University of Technology and AstraZeneca. You’ll be working in a stimulating environment, have access to our existing research, and you are encouraged to pursue your own independent research in cutting edge laboratories.

What’s more, you’ll have the support of leading scientists from Chalmers and AstraZeneca, who’ll provide you with the guidance and knowledge you need to develop your career. Utilizing academic research in industrial driven applications is an opportunity to make a real difference to the future of medical science.

About the Division of Systems and Synthetic Biology (Sysbio)
The Division of Systems and Synthetic Biology at the Chalmers University of Technology is one of the world leading research groups in systems and synthetic biology. Our research interests involve a wide range of activities from understanding the fundamental operational principles of metabolism and studies of metabolic diseases, to highly applied research directed towards development of new cell factories, e.g. used as next generation drug discovery and production platforms.

Major responsibilities
The open postdoc position is in the field of synthetic biology. It is a unique opportunity working with global leaders in drug discovery and synthetic biology. You will be able to work seamlessly between two world leading laboratories at Chalmers University and AstraZeneca, co-located in Gothenburg to bring your projects into reality, having access to the very best facilities and experts in the field from both organisations.  You will be using cutting edge synthetic biology techniques to engineer yeast into a novel drug discovery platform, including the development of intracellular biosensors, bioinformatic mining, heterologous enzyme expression and conducting high throughput screens. You will be accountable for the day to day running of your own project, but have shared responsibility for delivery of the overall project.

You will have developed excellent synthetic biology skills and now wish to apply them in a new way. You will be a creative problem solver, who sees challenge problems as opportunities to innovate. We also think you have a passion for team-work, and recognise the value of a strong network and working in an international multidisciplinary environment.

Position summary
Full-time employment for 2 years with a potential 1 year extension.

PhD degree in a biological field with a strong background in synthetic biology, the degree should generally not be older than three years. Experience with S. cerevisiae is a must. You should also have extensive skills in molecular biology, metabolic engineering, enzyme engineering, data analysis, statistics. Experience with microfluidics, bioinformatic mining, mashine learning, CRISPR, fluorescence microscopy, flow cytometry, FACS, HPLC, GC-MS is a bonus.

Chalmers continuously strives to be an attractive employer. Equality and diversity are substantial foundations in all activities at Chalmers.

Assistant Professor, Florian David,

Information about the department
The Department of Biology and Biological Engineering is aiming at bridging cutting edge life science research with biochemical engineering, in order to emerge as the leading innovation center in the region. The research has broad applications in areas of health and industrial production of e.g. fine chemicals, food and energy. An important mission is to drive the development of novel and improved tools to study effects on a cellular level through systems' biology analysis and modeling tools, metabolic engineering and bioimaging. Powerful experimental platforms are avialable such as well equipped fermenters, analytical instruments and laser based microscopy. The department offers highly qualified education for engineering students within the area of bioengineering. It is furthermore collaborating in broad, interdiciplinary national and international networks within academia and the industry.
