Information about the Research Project
We are looking for a highly motivated postdoc who will model reactions using micro-kinetics and/or kinetic Monte-Carlo methods, coupled with species transport equations, to predict catalytic output. The modelling shall account for the characteristics of the rarefied gas flow (velocity and pressure) through the dedicated nanofabricated reactor. The fundamental scientific questions that need to be addressed are primarily related to the nature and role of the flow-chemistry coupling in nanoscale reactive systems.
The project will be part of a larger research program that involves several other research groups at the Chemistry and Physics Departments of Chalmers. The overall goal of the project "Single Particle Catalysis in Nanoreactors" is to further push our understanding of catalytic reaction to the single particle level.
As a postdoc in this project, you will be working at the Division of Chemical Physics, and in close collaboration with the Division of Fluid Dynamics. Working as a postdoc requires a great deal of creativity and ability to think "outside the box". Furthermore, as the current project involves close cooperation with theoretical and experimental partners at two divisions, collaborative and communicative skills are essential.
Information about the research group
The Chemical Physics Division at the Department of Physics operates at the interface between materials science, nanoscience, catalysis, nanoplasmonics and in situ spectroscopy, with a particular focus on the development of sustainable energy systems. Themes include, for instance, alternative fuel production, emission control, energy storage, and fuel cells. The research is interdisciplinary with strong connections between fundamental and applied science. Chemical Physics Division is a dynamic and international environment that strives for scientific excellence through teamwork and joint experimental and theoretical efforts.
The theoretical activities at Chemical Physics focus on electronic structure calculations within the density functional theory together with mean-field modeling and Monte-Carlo simulations for reaction kinetics.
The reactive flow modelling at Fluid Dynamics is mainly focused on dispersed multiphase systems, flow through porous media and nanoscale reactive flows. A broad range of theoretical and numerical frameworks are used to analyze systems of different scale and level of complexity.

Your major responsibility will be to pursue the research and development within the project, and to collaborate with the experimental efforts in the larger research program. You are expected to develop your own scientific ideas and concepts, and to communicate the results of your research verbally and in writing. You will be guided by the senior researchers involved in the project and have ample opportunities to develop an extended network in the fields of heterogeneous catalysis, chemical kinetics and nanoscale flows.
Full-time postdoctoral scholarship position. The position is limited to one year with possibility for one-year extension, i.e. maximum of two years (1+1).
Necessary qualifications for the postdoctoral position are:
(1) PhD no older than two years and from a non-Swedish university.
(2) PhD in Physics, Engineering Physics, Chemical Engineering, Computational Mathematics or a similar subject area.
(3) Documented experience of relevant software (please describe what software and why you consider it relevant).
(4) Skills in scripting and programming are mandatory.
(5) A solid background in kinetic modeling and flow modeling is required.
(6) The candidate has to be able to work independently and have good skills in communicating scientific results in written and spoken English.
The position requires sound verbal and written communication skills in English.
