The materials and density-functional theory group at MC2, Chalmers, invites applications for a postdoc position: Development and implementation of nonlocal density functional theory, definition of benchmarking for biochemistry usage.

About us
The Department of Microtechnology and Nanoscience (MC2) focuses on research, innovation and education in the fields of future electronics, photonics, bio- and nanosystems, with a significant focus on materials. A close collaboration with Swedish and international partners within academia, industry, and society creates a creative environment. In addition to the 200 researchers and Ph.D. students, MC2 houses a cleanroom for micro- and nanofabrication. The Department also houses a leading density functional theory (DFT) activity.

Come help us develop DFT as both a general-purpose and biochemistry tool!
We are fellow architects of modern, so-called truly nonlocal DFT. Our van der Waals density functional (vdW-DF) method is a computationally efficient formulation of nonlocal DFT that also describes dispersion forces. These forces arise, for example, among organic molecules and typically control the structure in organic systems. The vdW-DF method is opening doors for DFT-based characterizations in organic chemistry, in nanoscience, in nanotechnology, and for biochemistry problems.

Guided by condensed-matter theory, we now have a consistent vdW-DF formulation for general-purpose DFT calculations. It works equally well among molecules and in traditional materials and we are set up to study both molecular crystals and heterogeneous organic systems. With implementation work, it is also possible to address large biochemistry systems. For example, we can use the strictly parameter-free vdW-DF method to assist structural characterization of proteins and to predict, understand, and engineer adhesion of biomatter at interfaces.

About the research project
You will help us resolve important remaining challenges for the organics-interface problem, and for asserting the vdW-DF method’s potential for a truly parameter-free exploration of biochemistry problems. The project requires implementation work. You will adapt vdW-DF implementations to facilitate first-principles DFT studies of large organic systems. In addition, you will help us build trust in the method by defining and launching new experiment-based benchmarking suits that are relevant for future biochemistry applications.

Major responsibilities 
Your work involves analysis and method development and code implementation for nonlocal DFT as well as work to define and launch new benchmarking. You will maintain and develop both code libraries, DFT-code contributions, and set up access to the benchmarking that we intend to provide in the project.

Position summary 
Full-time temporary employment. The postdoc position is for 1+1 year.

Qualifications
We seek a highly motivated and self-propelled person who has completed a Ph.D. in Physics, in Engineering Physics or in Physical Chemistry. Solid knowledge of condensed matter theory and DFT as well as experience in coding are requirements.

You are fluent in oral and written English. You are able to work both independently and as part of a collaborative effort.
