Associate professor or Assistant professor in Automatic Control

Västra Götalands län

REF 2023-0422

Do you want to contribute to a more sustainable society? As an assistant or associate professor in Automatic control, you will shape the future generations of control engineers, and work towards finding new applications and theoretical results in collaboration with academia and industry.

The position is a full-time faculty position, placed at the Department of Electrical Engineering. The department is characterized by a dynamic and international work environment with about 220 employees from more than 20 countries, with extensive national and international research collaborations with academia, industry and society.

The position can either be as an assistant or as an associate professor, depending on your qualifications.

The department and the research group
The position is at the division of Systems and Control, which consists of four research groups: Automation, Automatic Control, Mechatronics and Bionics, where each group has 20-35 professors, researchers, postdocs and PhD students. Apart from teaching activities at undergraduate level, the division manages one of the largest master programs at Chalmers; Systems, Control and Mechatronics. The division also manages Revere, a vehicle research lab focusing on autonomous vehicles, active safety, and vehicle dynamics, and also the competence center SAFER, which focuses on systems for traffic safety.

A large part of, but far from all, research is carried out in collaboration with the vehicle industry with particular focus on electric vehicle applications, transportation, energy management, battery management systems, hybridization, active safety, autonomous driving, and automated production. At the same time, new methods and theory are developed in, for example, robust control, optimal control, and process control.

Job description
The majority of your work will be carried out as individual research and research by supervision, based on funding attracted from external sources as well as from Chalmers. In particular, it is important that you have the ability to get projects granted in collaboration with academic partners, the vehicle industry or other companies. This requires good abilities for networking, creating new ideas, and communicating research results. Applied research as well as new theory of international interest, and ambitions to contribute to a more sustainable society, is expected.

You will also develop courses and carry out teaching on undergraduate and graduate level in Control, and supervise MSc and PhD students in Automatic control.

Your profile
You are a highly motivated researcher with a PhD degree in Automatic Control or equivalent. For an assistant professor, the doctoral degree must not be older than 7 years prior to the application deadline. Exceptions can be made for verified periods of parental leave, sick leave, or military service*.

We would like you to have experience of collaboration with industry. For the associate professor level, other mandatory requirements are:

-Experience in teaching and demonstrated good teaching proficiency at undergraduate as well as graduate level

- Experience of PhD supervision

- A publication record in reputable international journals demonstrating width, depth and originality.

- A record of approved research grants in national or international competition from research agencies, foundations or industry.

For assistant professor level, the above is not mandatory but of course a merit.

A research background matching the group's competence and clear qualifications in leading research projects, utilization, and research on vehicular applications, are advantageous but not necessary.

The position requires sound verbal and written communication skills in English. If Swedish is not your native language, we would like you to acquire sufficient knowledge to be able to communicate and teach in Swedish within a few years. Chalmers offers Swedish courses.

For a full definition of the qualifications and duties of an assistant or an associate professor, please consult our Rules of Procedure – Chalmers University of Technology's Appointment Regulations for Teaching and Research Faculty, Chapter 6.3-6.4.

 * The date shown in your doctoral degree certificate is the date we use, as this is the date you have met all requirements for the doctoral degree.

Contract terms
Full-time employment. Associate professor at Chalmers is a permanent faculty position. The appointment as Assistant professor is a four-year, entry-level, faculty position with tenure track, whereby you will acquire both pedagogical and research qualifications. An Assistant professor is expected to improve their ability to formulate and solve scientific problems, to publish scientific articles, and to develop their skills in teaching and supervision, by means of both practical training and independent study. The aim is to achieve the level of Associate professor within four years and, if successful, you will be offered a permanent faculty position at Chalmers.

The level of the position will be decided based on the qualifications of the selected candidate. Your qualifications and academic level will be evaluated by the department, Chalmers Faculty Appointment Committee and external evaluators.
