Master Thesis – Preliminary design and prototyping of a modular high altitude balloon power distribution system

SSC conducts several stratospheric balloon campaigns yearly, mainly from Esrange Space Center located in the North of Sweden. Traditionally, when flying equipment that requires power, primary battery cells are used and discarded after each flight. With the battery technology that exists today we believe that a rechargeable solution is close at hand and would like to investigate it further. It would be very interesting to come up with a power distributions system that has the option to use solar cells and thus prolong the power available during sun light.



To investigate different rechargeable battery technologies and how well they would perform in a high altitude environment and from the most promising, build a prototype.



  • Literature study
  • Investigation of different battery technology solutions
  • Implementation of a prototype system using the most suitable battery technology


  • The prototype would be flight ready including solar cells.



You have experience with electronics, low pressure environments and battery technology. We value students who are curious, proactive, and takes initiative as well as enjoys problem-solving.



The scope of this project is aimed for one person starting spring semester 2020 or by agreement.
