Background to the degree project
Shape optimization of the housing to identify location and size of structural features, early in the design process. This would involve setting up a DOE to identify the optimum parametric design.

Assignment description
- Study the existing methodology at GKN for optimization of aluminum structures.
- Establish methodology to improve the current process.
- Identify boundary constraints for the design under investigation
- Apply methodology on a concept housing design
- Overall process optimization to improve lead time

Goal
Develop a method for optimizing the aluminum housing of an AWD transfer gearbox with respect to several parameter (Weight, Stiffness, NVH, etc.)

Education
M.Sc in Engineering Mechanics or similar. Interest in automotive industry. Experience in optimization – topology, shape, CAD is preferable.

20 weeks.
