Musicology at Stockholm University is located in close connection to the other disciplines of the Department of Culture and Aesthetics: Art History, History of Ideas, Literature, and Theatre Studies. The Department of Culture and Aesthetics has approximately 140 employees and 1,000 students each academic year.
As a PhD student at the Faculty of Humanities you have the opportunity to participate in the Faculty’s Doctoral School, which offers themes and courses characterised by interdisciplinarity and cooperation across subjects. During the Fall 2017, the Faulty’s Doctoral Scool offers the theme Human and Materiality, in which the Department of Culture and Aestehtics is involved.
We especially encourage applications connected to the following fields of musicological research, which are important at the department: music in relation to other media, music and narratology, musical aesthetics, critical musicology, music theory and music analysis (for a presentation of the current research in musicology at the department, see: www.su.se/ike/english/musicology.
An employee as doctorand student shall be physically attendant at the department and be active at the seminar activities.
In order to meet the general entry requirements, the applicants must have completed a second-cycle degree, completed courses equivalent to at least 240 higher education credits (ECTS credits), of which 60 credits must be in the second cycle, or have otherwise acquired equivalent knowledge in Sweden or elsewhere.
In order to meet the specific entry requirements, the general syllabus for doctoral studies in the field of Musicology stipulates that applicants must have successfully completet an advanced level degree in Musicology: courses on advanced level covering at least 30 credits including an Essay covering at least 15 credits.
In ordet to meet the specific entry requirements, the applicants must have proficiency covering at least 550 credits on a Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). This concerns not students that have successfyúlly completet university education where English is a qualification requirement.
The entry requirements can also be met by students who have acquired equivalent knowledge in Sweden or elsewhere. Eligibility must be met at the latest by the application date.
The overall assessment of the candidates focuses on their capacity to benefit from the training. The selection among the eligible candidates will therefore be based on the following specific criteria:

Terms of employment
The term of the initial contract may not exceed one year. The employment may be extended for a maximum of two years at a time. However, the total period of employment may not exceed the equivalent of four years of full-time study.
Doctoral students should primarily devote themselves to their own education, but may engage in teaching, research, and administration corresponding to a maximum of 20 % of a full-time position.
