The faculty of Health and Society
The PhD position is placed at the Faculty of Health and Society, Department of Biomedical Science. The education and research activities at the faculty contribute with the knowledge useful to preserve, support and promote people’s physical, psychological, and social health. Research is taking place in areas ranging from science in technology and medicine to social science. At the interfaces between them, exciting new areas for research are being generated. The research at the faculty is also linked to the research center Biofilms - Research Center for Biointerfaces which combines biomedical science with clinical and translational research in medical, dental, food and environmental application areas in close collaboration with regional industry.

Project description
At the Department of Biomedical Science, we are running several projects with a strong focus on development of electrochemical biosensors. Exploring bioelectrochemical reactions enabled by novel nanobiomaterials, we have an interest in developing battery-less monitoring systems for wireless detection of, e.g., bacterial infections in wounds, growth of microbial biofilms, or, broadly, characterization of disorders of biological barriers. We have an interest in extending this research field within the department by deeper research efforts on nanobiomaterials. Subsequently, we are looking for a highly ambitious student who would like to be engaged in challenging research on nanobiomaterials for wireless biosensors. Specific aims of this PhD project are:
- to develop of nanobiomaterial based biosensor tags possessing practically competitive sensitivity to clinically relevant analytes, e.g., reactive oxygen species, low molecular weight metabolites and biomarkers, bacteria and bacterial biofilms. Practically, this means development of biosensor tags, which show specific responses superior to signal fluctuations due to the variation of environmental factors such as pH, temperature and conductivity of the solution;
- to develop mediatorless, direct electron transfer (DET) based, wiring of enzymes to nanoparticles for realizing enzymatic nanoparticle oxidation and reduction;
- to develop mediated (mediated ET, MET) electronic wiring of enzymes and microorganisms to nanomaterials for realizing biological nanoparticle oxidation and reduction;
- to screen nanomaterials, which can be biologically interconverted between their metallic, ionic or semiconducting states.

The doctoral students will have the opportunity to take part in teaching at undergraduate level, however, according to regulations, teaching and administrative work is limited to a maximum of 20% of working hours. Provisions on appointment as a doctoral student are laid out in the Swedish Higher Education Ordinance, Chapter 5, Sections 1-7.

The research topic is “Biomedical science” and the Faculty examine Doctors of Philosophy (i.e., in Swedish: Teknologie doctor, Doktor i medicinsk vetenskap and Medicine doctor).

PhD-student position in Biomedical science
In order to be considered for appointment as a doctoral student, the applicant must meet the general entry requirements for third-cycle courses and study programmes, and is considered in other respects to have the ability required to benefit from the course or study programme. Ordinance (2010:1064).

General entry requirements:

  1. a second-cycle higher education degree
  2. completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits are second-cycle
  3. in some other way, nationally or internationally, acquired equivalent knowledge.

The higher education institution may permit an exemption from the general entry requirements for an individual applicant, if there are special grounds. Ordinance (2010:1064).

The specific entry requirements are defined as requirements essential for students to be able to benefit from the course or study programme.

Basis of assessment
Initial assessment concerns the general and specific eligibility requirements (above).

Further, according to Higher Education Ordinance 5 Chap. 5 §, importance is placed on the student’s ability to appropriate the advanced learning of the third-cycle PhD program. The previously written materials are important indicators of this ability as well as research experience and documented relevant working life experience. Of special relevance is independently written material on an advanced level. 

The student’s research program requires development of competence in a broad range of experimental methods and scientific areas, and thus a relevant background and demonstration of technical aptitude are essential. The research work will be performed in a collaborative environment, and the ability to interact positively and work productively with other researchers of different disciplines, particularly, chemistry, physics, microbiology and medicine is essential.

Previous experience in one or more of the following areas is an advantage:
- Preparation of nanobiomaterials and their characterization
- Preparation and characterization of heterogeneous catalysts, sensors, or biosensors
- Experience in analytical and electroanalytical chemistry
- Experience in NFC and RFID measurements especially in combination with biosensors tags
- Experience in working with enzymes and microbial cells

Additional assessment criteria include demonstrated analytical and communication skills, and demonstrated fluency in written and spoken English.
